My definition of listening is analysing what sounds are going through your head. To listen is not to just experience, but to process and understand.
Hearing is not entirely different, hearing is a part of listening but in my opinion hearing is a step down from active listening. When you are hearing, your brain is aware of stimulation from audio, but it is not focusing on the different levels within the sound.
